Chapter Seven
Blink and June cruised through the city streets in a brand-new Beemer, fresh off the lot. Blink had just copped the black-on-black joint with white seats. He was feeling like an overnight celebrity and was glad to finally be in a position of power. He ended up pawning the watches for $50,000 evenâonly a fraction of their real valueâand still had his share of the bricks from the robbery. He knew exactly where to unload them and headed to the trap spot to give his big homey an offer he couldnât refuse. Blink was high off life plus a gram of the powder that he had taken from one of the bricksâit was the purest coke he had ever sniffed. He had on a fresh leather Pelle Pelle and wood-grain-and-gold Cartier glasses on his face, with a wooden toothpick dangling from his mouth. A freshly lined haircut and a pocketful of money made him feel like Tony Montana. He glanced over at June who was admiring his own gold chain and bobbing his head to the music blasting from the speakers. June was loving the attention they got in the mall earlier and the feeling of money in his pocket. He was definitely catching the vapors.
Blink pulled up to a house that his big homey ran and instructed June to wait in the car. He was going to try to unload the bricks at a wholesale price, to make a quick profit. Blink lifted the armrest and grabbed the small baggie full of coke. He sprinkled a little between his index finger and thumb, then dipped his head and used his nose as a vacuum. He quickly threw his head back to prevent his nose from running. After a couple of seconds he closed his eyes as he felt the total euphoria.
Blink looked over at June and held up the baggie. âHere, take a bump,â he offered.
June had never done coke and had no desire to, even though he sometimes slung it in their project. However, he felt obligated to prove that he wasnât soft. He was still embarrassed by the fact that he had frozen during the Harris robbery and wanted so badly to prove himself to Blink. So June grabbed the bag and mimicked what he saw Blink do: he poured a small snow hill between his index finger and thumb and then sniffed it up.
âSlow down, homey! Take it easy,â Blink laughed.
June threw his head back and felt an instant rush. He was in new territory. âFuck . . .â he said under his breath as the drugs hit him like a ton of bricks.
âYeah, nigga,â Blink said, âyou tried to be superman on your first go-around. Yo ass going to be stuck. Like I told you, stay here. Iâm going to run in here real quick.â He reached in the backseat and grabbed the duffle bag holding the bricks.
June watched Blink exit the car and turned up the volume of the music so that he could zone out.
